This brief asked me to create and compile a design solution or creative project that explores a personal passion within the field of media design. In order to achieve excellence, I needed to deepen my knowledge within UX/UI Design and integrate new methodologies into my current practice to further come up with a final artifact that concluded my findings.

Introduction

The fashion industry has been recognised as one of the major industries that contribute to environmental damage. Despite the widely publicised environmental impacts however, this industry continues to grow, in part due to the rise of fashion trends, cheap manufacturing, frequent consumption and short-lived garment use. How consumers are still contributing to opt for fast fashion is a lingering question.

On the basis of these impacts, my research investigated why consumers are choosing fast fashion over sustainable garments, who these consumers are, and what these fast fashion brands are doing about the situation at hand. It also outlines the need for fundamental changes in the fashion business model, including the introduction of sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, as well as a shift in consumer behaviour.

To answer this question properly, I dove deep into experiments to connect the gap between company and consumer, creating new ground for ideation.

Through research and interviews, I touched on industry trends, consumer behaviour, and existing ideas being trialled in the fashion industry. By researching further relevant fields, I proposed possible solutions along the way and applied them to each next experiment, continuously growing my knowledge and shaping the idea until I had a solid solution backed up from user feedback and research. Each idea was evaluated for its feasibility, viability, desirability, and alignment with the business values. Prioritising this framework allowed me to assess all ideation through a simple lens and ensure consistency through my chosen methodologies.

Research Process: From insight, to impact

Final Outcome: Designing for a sustainable future

Strategic design requires research, data, and testing to deliver successful propositions. This brief helped me excel in each of these elements, moving beyond theory toward a successful new reality. From this, I created a forward-thinking proposition for a global advocacy organisation transforming the fashion industry to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. Restore’s main mission is to encourage companies and consumers to work collaboratively to take action to create long-lasting sustainable impacts on the environment and clothing industry.

I was able to create a business proposition that celebrates fashion as a positive influence while also addressing the industry’s poor practices and raising awareness of the fashion industry’s most pressing problems. Restore aims to show that change is possible and encourage those who are on a journey to create a more ethical, sustainable and transparent future for fashion.
