The Brief

Book Design
This assignment asked me to apply knowledge and skills to research, art direct, and plan a photography shoot, resulting in the creation of a book that corresponds to a historical art movement of my choosing.
I chose to focus on the Feminist Art Movement because it was empowering, educating, and made viewers question the status quo. Fascinated by the way it has evolved over years and how it continues to exist in modern culture, I delved into research and from my findings, the decision to photograph freedom dancers became clear. Much like the concept of Feminist Art, dancers use their stage as a blank canvas for new ideas and concerns, holding up a mirror to society and its contexts. Dancing hand in hand with the feminist movements, the history of dance correlates with gender equality and what it means to be a woman beyond stigmas.
This book features six strangers who, much like the feminist art movement, worked collaboratively to tell their own stories through beautiful and empowering art. Although I wanted my photographs to capture how the individuals use their bodies to express themselves in society, the main appeal for this book lies in the natural beauty of these women - the flaws, the creativity, and the emotion captured behind the lens.
