Research & Insights

There is a concerning absence of female designers in New Zealand compared to males, with only 1 in 5 women working in design, despite the fact that they make up 7 out of 10 students studying design. This concerning gap between academia and industry, coupled with the challenges women face in the workplace, has inspired this speculative project that envisions the power of uniting women in design.

An Overview:

The project introduces a conceptual brand, 'Women in Design,' and within that, the annual event ‘DesignHer+’, aimed at creating awareness of creative strengths, inspiring future careers, and fostering the growth of a more equitable design industry. As a female designer, this project is inspired by my personal experiences and values of diversity, inclusivity, and transparency. As a UX/UI designer, this project allowed me to explore my accumulated knowledge while pushing the boundaries of my usual design styles. My design approach is centred on transparency and inclusivity, and I prioritise using my privilege to address important issues through design. This project's primary objective is to help bridge the gap between academia and industry and inspire female designers by demonstrating the power of visibility and uniting women in design.

'Women in Design' emerges as a conceptual brand with a dedication to connecting and supporting women entering the Aotearoa design industry. It offers a platform for forging a community of like-minded creatives and aims to inspire future careers by nurturing connections with accomplished female role models. The brand's core strategies revolve around Networking, Events, and Design Practice, with a focus on enhancing visibility and inclusivity. Within this project, particular emphasis is placed on the ‘Events’ strategy, leading to the creation of 'DesignHer+.' This sub-brand offers a two-day immersive experience for female creatives embarking on their design careers. The event is a unique journey into creativity, culture, and leadership, and includes interactive workshops, inspiring speakers, and networking opportunities. The event focuses on helping participants discover their Creative Identity, building connections with fellow female professionals, and discussing future potential within the design industry. The most significant value it provides is the sense of community, facilitated both during the event and through online platforms, with the aim of further transitioning into a long term partnership with ‘Women in Design’. The annual recurrence of the event underscores the commitment to staying relevant, fostering new connections, and inspiring the next generation of female designers, ultimately enabling attendees to excel in an ever-evolving creative landscape.

To support this concept, research highlights that positive and supportive guidance among females promotes diversity, inclusivity, mentorship, and growth. Offering aspiring female designers a community, networking opportunities, and support, establishes a path to career success and greater confidence, benefiting both individuals and the industry at large.

Furthermore, both 'Women in Design' and 'DesignHer+' emerge as a bridge between academia and the design industry, encouraging women to engage with a supportive community of like-minded creatives and inspiring their journey into the design field. Grounded in human-centred design and lean methodology, the project leverages surveys and discussion groups to gain valuable insights. The outputs include a promotional website, a creative media strategy, and a collection of collateral. Additionally, this journey has provided a powerful reflection into my own wants and needs as a female design student, inspiring my path as I enter the design industry.
